Mothers without Hands is inspired by & seeks to reinterpret an ancient Czech custom celebrative of Eastertime and springtime. A uniquely Moravian ritual, it was actively practiced up until the Second World War and employed as a form of protest & means of protection by women who had been raped, before being banned by the Nazis and suppressed by Communist authorities.

Mothers without Hands is driven by collaborations with the Take Up Space Festival, the Folkstone Women’s Forum and MOLO in Folkestone, with Arts All Over The Place in Erdington, and with Aaina Hub and Caldmore Community Garden in Walsall as well as with a Czech Women’s Educational Institute and environmental charity, Nadace Veronica in Brno and Radost Suchdol (Joy in Suchdol) a folk group in Prague. Focusing on the universally resonant subject of violence against women and the importance of dialogue and intercultural exchange within and across supportive, diverse and integrated international communities, Mothers without Hands is a compelling project of care and compassion.
